Jesus Christ had developed such a widespread reputation as someone with miraculous healing power that people throughout the entire region of Gennesaret (in ancient Judea in modern Israel) went to get the sick people they knew and brought them to Jesus as soon as he visited their area. The Bible describes that Jesus miraculously healed every one of the many sick people he met there. Two of the Gospels tell the story: Matthew 14:34-36 and Mark 6:53-56:

Bringing the Sick to the Healer

People immediately recognized Jesus when he arrived, the Bible says, so they rushed to get all of the people they knew who were suffering from illness of some kind. Jesus had been performing lots of miracles recently, and news about them had spread. The previous day, Jesus had miraculously fed thousands of people with only a small amount of food from one boy’s lunch. The previous night, Jesus had miraculously walked on water. So when Jesus showed up in their area, the local people brought those who were sick to Jesus, hoping that he would heal them.

Mark 6:53-55 describes the scene this way: "When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was."

People were so excited to see Jesus that they ran to tell others he was there. They did whatever they could to help those whom they hoped would benefit from Jesus' miraculous power -- even carrying people who couldn't walk by their own power.

Healing Touch

Jesus roamed throughout the whole Gennesaret region to visit all of the people there who wanted to see him, and the Bible says that a great many people experienced miraculous healing from coming into contact with Jesus then.

The story concludes in Mark 6:56: "And wherever he went -- into villages, towns or countryside -- they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed."

Just the touch of Jesus' cloak was enough to transfer his healing power into people's sick bodies and cause them to recover completely.
